    • “The Larry Baskin Show”

      May 29th, 2009

Ministry of the Heart (MotH) reaches out to men, women and youth incarcerated in and around Memphis, TN. Larry Baskin is the founder, director and hardest working volunteer of MotH. Last month, City on a Hill’s Ministry Support team went down to Memphis to meet Larry, conduct interviews and shoot footage that would allow us to put together a ministry support video for MotH.

Those of us who went on the trip jokingly called MotH,”The Larry Baskin Show” because Larry goes into every prison, jail and penal farm that he can gain admittance to and on his off hours he serves at a downtown mission. Instead of taking vacations, he goes on mission trips. Although the friends and family who volunteer alongside Larry in the ministry might agree with our view; Larry would protest loudly. For him, MotH is “The Jesus Show” or it is nothing.

Larry’s one and only goal, and his vision for MotH is to live out the great commission to “go and tell everyone the good news”. He asks each day that God will entrust him with one soul and he doesn’t make that request lightly. Even when we were out shooting b-roll for the video, Larry stopped and talked to this man on the street outside the city jail.

Larry is a burly guy with a really big heart that is burdened for those who might never hear if he doesn’t go. He leads a dedicated group of volunteers in ministering behind bars to people who most of us would like to forget are there and he does it with ease and with a joy that is infectious.

One of his supporters is sponsoring the making of the ministry support video that City is producing. Larry told us several times while we were with him that he doesn’t really know how he will use the DVD once we finish it. He just does the work in front of him and trusts God to provide for the needs of the ministry. We hope that our video will let others know about the work that is being done in Memphis through Ministries of the Heart and that people will be encouraged to support the ministry. I think that Larry will be okay with that, as long as God gets all the glory.

        Brother Larry,
I miss you and your family very much. I have lost your cell numbers and wanted to talk to you many times. I did leave a message on an old home number but did not hear anything back. I have spoken at Village Baptist several times in the past for different groups. I was suprised to hear that you were in town with the prision ministy. Next time please call me. You & your family will always be close to my heart. I love you all deeply. Can’t wait to hear from you. I have a lot to share and want to know what God is doing in your lives.
        Forever in Christ,
        Judy Vaughn Marbry
